Did you read what they use as coating to protect the magnets? Black epoxy.

BTW: A few of my early kayaks used magnetic hatches and I never really liked them. I probably didn;t use enough of them or my gasket material was too thick.

Yes, there is a learning curve to achieve full success with any new idea. I've worked out the weaknesses over the last ten years.

A seeming simple straight forward idea, needed attention to small details in magnet placement and size, gasket placement, and contact points to become a watertight and reliable design. Details make all the difference.

It may take more work to build. The impressive sealing power, even on flat decks and the ease of use is a winner.
