One of the best options for flat bottom holes is an end mill. You can get solid carbide spiral cut 1/2" diameter router bits and chuck them into a drill press. They will make a beautiful flat bottomed hole.

Or you can try a metal working end mill intended for milling machines. With the right size shank they can also be put in a drill press.
