I pinned the connections with some hotglue, stainless ringshank nails and a few stainless screws for the ends.

I have considered screws. Baltic Birch plywood will actually take screws in between the plys pretty well with a pilot hole. But I will be dealing with inexperienced Grandparents and kids. I learned really quick that I need to make it simple so I don't end up running myself to death having to do the skilled tasks. I can't see them driving nails and hitting the frames without a lot mistakes. Same with drilling pilot holes and screws.
