Spray skirt does pretty much what the name says, keeps the water out of the boat, kayaking is a very wet thing to do.

Getting out of the boat with a skirt on takes only a second to yank on the grab loop, usually comes off almost instantly when you do that then you fall out, pretty easy.

Generally you don't want to sit back against the cockpit opening like it looks like you're doing, gets your weight too far back and raises the bow out of the water. Normally you'd want to sit towards the middle of the cockpit.

If you've got Nick's book, you'll see back bands in it, much better than a rigid back rest.
