S&G: Glassing opinions

My buddy picked up a S&G kayak of Craigslist for $150 that needs a bit of work. It sounds like it has only seen the water 1 or 2 times (per the seller) and then sat for who knows how many years, boats still in great shape but needs a new coat of varnish.

My big concern. The entire deck and the most of the cockpit are not glassed. Should we at least glass the inside of the cockpit or is a good coat of varnish good enough if it's well taken care of?

Also, the boat seems to have the same construction techniques as a CLC Chesapeake. The top/deck is 2 sheets of ply scarfed near the center of the boat and nailed down into a runner at the edge. The deck sits much lower, the cockpit opening is larger and the stern is not at a 90 degree angle though. Anyone have a guess to what model it might be?
