Lots of experience and loads of tricks to keep one safe. Thinking that a driver is looking at you while you're riding a bike gets lots of riders hurt, they very often are looking right past you and have no idea you're there, that big truck behind you is what's got their attention, not you.

If the wheels are standing still, it's not rolling, usually easy to tell if the wheels are turning or not. If it's not moving it can't hit you.

Even though I live in a state where wearing a helmet is optional, I always wear one, have for years.
