I think the glue stick rage is just a fad. I believe in good old plastic tube, obtainable through eBay by the kilometre (or 5/8ths of a mile if you prefer), in various diameters. No risk of breaking off in the hole.

PVC plastic tubing? Bah, talk about OLD school... Surgical silicone tubing is THE thing. It costs a bit more but is the easiest for removal. It definitely needs a backer material (coax cable is great for 1/4" ID). It'll stretch forever and not break. Nothing sticks to it.

I've used a glue sticks a few times and found to be... merely adequate. Having them snap them off in the tubes is not fun. Another minus, once stretched for removal they are not reusable, either for more fittings nor for gluing.
