How lucky I am to live where I do, (Ontario, Canada). I've never seen a SUP on the local (small) lake where I can launch a canoe or kayak anytime and anyplace I please. They even let me in during the "closed" season along with the dog walkers. The most annoying thing there can be a nearby commercial canoe rental which occasionally trucks down large groups of paddlers for training on their rental canoes, which all have armoured bows and are apparently intended for ramming. I avoid them like the plague; last encounter was when I was struggling out of my kayak at the ramp - I'm into my 70's and it can take a minute. I put my $250 paddle down on the ramp and sddenly about 10 large canoes charged up the ramp, one guy hauled his canoe right over my paddle. No apology from these folks: such a contrast with the usual courtesy one gets on the water from most users (except police).

Things HAVE changed lately in nearby Barrie, the beach was roped off for swimmers but there was about 20 yards between the end of that and the rocks where a kayak could launch, but the gap has been filled in, so I have to launch into the marina and try to avoid monster yachts chugging in, and the water is fithy - yuch. There is a decent canoe club there, though, so I don't really have much to complain about.

Within an hour's trip: last time I was in Toronto there were several groups of kayakers in the harbor, and Midland and Penetanguishene both have handy, clean launching facilites with good parking although rarely used by kayakers.

I sometimes vacation in the Highland lakes where launching facilities and lake access are supposedly required by law but often cleverly hidden miles from nearest parking, but the typical B&B has a deal with someone with frontage. There I encounter SITs and SUPs; both these types of user seem to be perpetually on their first day out but 100 yards out and they are behind me.
