I agree except SUP's were actually originally designed by surfers, not fitness gurus, and work exceptionally well as such. They suck for flat water paddling. I agree it is not an optimal stance and horrible upwind. It's still a great workout and great for surfing.

I didn't expound on it, but the surf industry was dying and the SUP came along and suddenly they can sell a "surfboard" to a guy in Arizona. Now every company wants a SUP design because it quadruples their market share. I hate the masses on them, but it is a necessary evil in the surf industry. Without them there would probably be no Surftech. The yoga class at the upwind mark (See Thor's reply about that) is a prime example of why the "hate" in my "love-hate" relationship with them. Paddling to Mingo Cay, surfing the swell that builds between the cays, and then paddling back to shore is why the "love."

I see planing SUP's as a longboard surfboard with a paddle. I see displacement hull SUP's as a downwind workout and something new for mankind to race each other on. When I need to get from point "a" to point "b", paddle offshore, or paddle around a lake or stream- hello kayak.
