Well again, lowering the coaming is a function of how wide the recess is. Of course, the deeper it becomes the more length you might have to throw in to give it graceful lines. But in the case of that photo of John's boat, if we wanted that coaming rim to be lower, we would accomplish it by making that recess wider. Am I making sense?
