The hull is round, 18" wide, and it's configured so that you sit up high and at gunwale level - so, no, I have not sailed (or paddled) her without the outrigger. Nor do I think I could, practically speaking.
Beam(ish) reach in the video. Keeping the ama on top of the water is typically only a matter of ooching over to one side of the boat or the other, and/or leaning out 6" or so. Best done without camera in hand, apparently.
The ama I'm using is a stability aid rather than a full on float. A full floatation ama would work great, of course, and would be far better for some purposes. But for barreling around the inlet here, she is just dandy as is. So much so that I can't justify the time, effort or money to add even the simplest extra floatation to that 2x4.
I might add that it is still working great even when racing along 8" under the water . . . though it's disconcerting to look over there and see it happening. But, simply leaning a bit to the other side brings the ama back up with ease - no frantic or athletic maneuvers required.
