With an outrigger and a very short paddle my six year old grandson could barely make his new seaflea move, but a year later I removed the outrigger, gave him a light 220cm paddle, told him to rock the boat from side to side to feel how it performs in the water, and away he went. With the flat bottom and wide 19" beam he had absolutely no problem. He weighs 45 lbs. His friend, a 9 year old, also inexperienced in a kayak, slid in and also paddled away.
