To be fair, there is one downside of planed scarf joints: The surface created by a plane doesn't give much grip for the glue. If you can't wait overnight for the glue to fully set the joint is likely to break. I tried sanding the surfaces lightly before glueing once and it came out a lot stronger. Not very practical but good to know anyway…

That's surprising. I had heard that dust from sanding can interfere with gluing. The bond is supposed to take place within the wood, as well as on the surface. I would expect a surface cut with a knife edge would have clean, open grain for the glue to key in to. Dust, according to some, blocks the grain and prevents proper adhesion.

I think this may be more imporant with some wood species than with others, such as hardwoords or close-grained woods. Dust or not I have never had a failure with any scarfed joint, sanded, planed or sawn - other than experimental ones done and broken deliberately for test purposes; I mostly use softwoods such as cedar, pine or spruce.
