Hi,

I haven't used an external beam, so please take my comments accordingly.

I have however built a Cape Ann design using Vaclav's process, and found that the internal beam approach works just fine. In particular, I like the precision and stiffness with which the internal beam holds the forms. The internal beam allows me to completely remove the form structure from the hull without disturbing the alignment of the forms prior to stripping the deck. This avoids any unpleasant surprises later because I hot glue the deck strips to the forms, so the hull must come off first in order to get the forms out of the deck. While I am at it, I put garbage bag plastic inside the hull to catch glue drips during deck stripping. Another thing I like about the internal beam is that the extra weight during stripping the deck probably adds stability during fitting and clamping of deck strips.

I am also using the same internal beam and supports to complete a second similarly sized kayak that I designed with Kayak Foundry software, so the internal beam can in fact be used for slightly different designs., you just have to modify your bow and stern forms to fit the ends of the existing beam. If you were doing lots of kayaks of different lengths, an external support would presumably be more easily transferable from boat to boat.

In any case,I think that you should not hesitate to try an internal beam. I am sure that perfect end results are obtainable either way.
