I used an automotive clear coat, labeled as Polyurethane - 2 part.

Please give concrete examples of what you are talking about.

I would be leery of being in the vicinity of any two part product in a mist of fine droplets. Two part systems typically harden due to chemical reaction. This being the case, they can harden in your lungs. This does not sound like a good way to die, but I've heard that it happens. Mix this with the volatile solvents evident in the smell of automotive paint, and I would want a extremely good respirator system to feel vaguely safe.

System 3 LPU is different than most automotive paints in that it will harden (dry) without the addition of the crosslinker. It just isn't as good without it. I don't believe LPU has much in common with automotive paints, but I still wouldn't want to breath the stuff. If I understand correctly, it is a polyurethane dispersion in a water solution. While I wouldn't want to breath the mist, it would probably have a hard time drying in your lungs.

Given all this, since I don't now have the equipment to work with automotive paints, and have a shop attached to my house, I am happy to let professionals spray my boats when I go the automotive clear coat route.
