Excellent response, Allan. I like this forum for its good level of activity and and informative answers, but after all, message boards tend to "get like that"
For example, its sometimes hard to get people to actually READ and stick to the question. My original question was about how to adapt the plan, which is based on an internal beam, to an external. The thread soon became an Internal vs. External Debate, between the respondents.
I decided to take Oliver's advice- stick to the plan and learn new (to me) techniques. My first attempt at a plywood beam came out crooked. Then, I tried particle board. It came out straight, but then I dropped the (damned heavy!) thing, and it broke. I'm going to do it again, having decided NOT to change the building technique because I'm having trouble with the beam.
Another thing that happens often on forums is a sort of "logical leap". Examples:
"I've built 14 kayaks by the internal beam method, and I can tell you its the ONLY way to go!"
"I built this beauty ( see photo) with an external beam. Results speak!"
If you built 14 kayaks by the same technique, chances are that you are very good at it, but if you haven't built by another technique, you have nothing to compare it to.
The kayak in the beautiful photo might not actually be Fair.
As you say, what works for one may not work for another.
