I should have added that you want to coat and finish the edges of the hatch hole with slightly thickened epoxy after trueing up the shape and before you apply the masking tape and packing tape.
Also, the purpose of the masking tape is to provide a little bit of a gap between the hatch cover and the hatch hole. You do not want the hatch binding in the opening.
