I had the same thing on an older Cape Charles kayak. I went from the top of the coaming and drilled evenly spaced holes down thru the coamig into the inside of the boat. Then I glued in 1/4" dowells with thickened epoxy and clamped the coaming so the gap was closed while the epoxy cured. Tape the bottom of the holes so the epoxy doesn't run out. After cured, cut and sand the dowells flush with the top of the coaming. I painted my coaming after but you could probably make the dowells look like a decorative touch also.
