I shoot two-part automotive clears all the time. I use a proper respirator and do it outside on the porch.

The advantage is not just the shiny look. The reason I use automotive clearcoats is the durability and the UV Protection. I find it to be the best choice for those reasons. The good looks is an added advantage. Also it's the easiest to apply and it cures quickly. In fact, it cures so quickly that I have to act fast to get the coats on while the previous coat is still slightly tacky, which I find best for this type of paint.

I do agree $300 is cheap. I pay close to that just for the paint for one kayak.
