I think that there is a misconception that spraying somehow makes a better finish just because it's sprayed. Sprayed finish isn't magic. You can achieve just as "perfect" a finish with the right brushed-on finish. One of the keys to a good finish with any product is preparation of the substrate. After that the magic in finishing is in large part wet sanding and buffing. It's just as much an art doing surface prep and wet sanding/buffing. Even the pros do it. You ever watch that car building show with Chip Foose where they have an army of guys sanding cars- before and after they spray.

For me- the issue isn't perfection of the finish. There are a bunch of other reasons. One is speed of application, the other is hardness and durability. The harder the finish is the easier it is to wet sand/buff to a more "perfect" finish. The harder it is, the harder it is to damage, but the easier it is to repair. You're less likely to scrape through to the epoxy, and up to a point you can just wet sand and buff again. Varnish is really soft. I don't really like it. cure time is also an issue. It's 6 weeks to full cure of traditional varnish, and 24 hours with Awlcraft 2000.

I just don't want people to think that it's a magic perfect finish just because it's sprayed, or that the only reason people spray is for cosmetic reason. If varnish were a superior finish they'd use it on cars, right?
