I freely admit that "I dont know nuttin' bout nuttin' " on this subject....but how about cutting up polyproplylene filter bags for material? Readily available and pretty cheap. I have no idea what weave you were working with, and these are probably pretty random strand stuff, but it should wet out, no? And seeing as its just an external abrasion layer...
