Yes, they are related. I was one in a previous life.

I woke up in a barrage of loon laughter one morning on a canoe trip in Killarney Provincial Park in 1970.

I was camped on a small island on a small lake and a flotilla of seven loons were circling my island in a the morning fog calling their lungs out.

Kind of a mystical moment of terror!
