Cedar fence planks can be obtained for about the same cost on a board-foot basis; I have used them for strip-built boats. They are 5/8 thick which is suitable for ripping into strips. They vary in quality, but I have a lot of rather old fencing that has to maintained to keep local kids out of my pool, so I set aside the good stuff for boats and the ones with character get used in the Spring fence repair ritual. Not having enough space for a table saw or band saw I can't use 4 x 4's. Also, most of the 4 x 4's I see around here (Ontario, Canada) have been impregnated.
