I will add to the comments above tandems are heavy and harder to car top, longer and harder to handle onn small rivers until you get exprience, and reduce the social nature of the paddle because you are not side by side. On the other hand if you have a strong paddler and a more relaxd paddler you still go the same pace, they are usually a lot more roomy so you get the volvo wagon feel instead of the mini cooper feel, they can be more efficiient. My wife only goes out in a tandem, the only time I paddle a tandem is with my wife.
