You've heard the view of solo paddlers, all that is true, for them.
I paddled tandem canoes in white water and on local and wilderness trips for 20 years. Some couples just get along, work well together and have fun being a team. For them, it is a shared experience very different from the solo paddler.
To my knowledge the Aleut were the only kayak builder who ever built tandem kayaks.
My Twin Star Aleut style baidarka is the highest volume tandem you will find, ideal for a larger person with more cargo space than any other tandem.
I have yet to have a builder of my Twin Star put a rudder on this design. It handles beautifully. As novice paddlers you my find you prefer a rudder, the bottom line is to do whatever you need to do, to have fun.
To be sure, the Twin Star is more challenging to build than other kayaks. I have a 90 minute DVD devoted to construting the bow and stern. But if you enjoy building you will love the results.
