I love all these responses with the hate for tandems. I have built several tandems. Most for long distance racing of one sort or another. I used one of my tandems as a means to get close to a fellow racer that didn't have her own kayak. After many training sessions I convinced her to go out on a date with me. We are married now and even though she loves the single I built for her she still prefers the tandem when we plan a leisure paddle trip.

My first strip tandem was straight from Nick's book, a Great Auk. I think it would be perfect for you. First, it is pretty easy to build as a strip boat because the lines don't require a lot of extra work in fitting up the bow or stern. Second, even though it was pretty fast in the water it is an incredibly stable boat to paddle. I think it may be a little too stable for real experienced paddlers but overall it is a great design.
