As far as skin goes, i can get a hold of either clear vinyl, same as my Nikumi, or even the PVC that you mention.
The weight of the kayak will not be an issue at the moment. These boats are for complete starters and we literally have to make do with what we can get our hands on.
The joints: i will want to teach the lads scarf jointing. It will take longer but this will not be a one week course where you walk in and a week later walk out with a built kayak. This is first and foremost to get the local lads interested in some kind of activity. Woodworking forms a strong part of this small community so this will just be an extension to their knowledge.
Locally there is a huge generation gap where traditional values sometimes clash with more modern views and we want to take advantage of our presence in the area to leave a small part of our social interests that coincide with the strong bond that these people have with the sea.
