Never fear, you will enjoy paddeling it even if the finish is not "professional" grade.
I built the North Star and recently had to refinish it. I was stunned to see the less than perfect finish.

But it paddles just fine and I like it a lot.

BTW, I have 3 spots where looking inside the hull I can see light comming thru the wood and glass. So you are not alone there either.
