If the glue line is indeed the weak point in these instances, my guess is that it is because the epoxy does not adhere as well to carpenter's glue or to TB as it does to the timber. There is probably a micro delamination along the glue line. If this is what is happening, then tight joints are definitely a plus. The move toward thinner planking and lighter glass, with, consequently, more flexible hulls, probably does not help either.

There is always going to be a weakest point somewhere. Push anything hard enough and it will break.
If we really want tougher boats, then S&G is probably a better bet.
