If you're going to go less than 3/16" strips and are going to have rough use of the kayak, you really need to go extra heavy on the glass or you'll have failures. You have to get the required strength somewhere. It's cheaper and lighter to go to slightly heavier (thicker) wood.
Yes you can go really light on the strips and use light glass, but the boat has to be treated with kid gloves, water entrances/exits etc.
