Seeking: Why free plans only?

I wrote this as a reply to a thread and then backed out before posting. Didn’t want to sidetrack the thread or appear I was trying to stir something up. As a businessman I am just trying to gain some insight.

I see people who will not buy boat plans and will only build a boat if they can get get the plans or offsets free. While there are some good free plans out there, there are a lot of questionable ones too. I see people build ugly and poor performing boats just because the plans are free.

My question is why?
Are the plans prices just to high?
Is your budget so tight that every dollar matters?
Don’t think there is any difference between boat designs?
Or something else?

Again, I am not going to slam anyone. I am just looking for insight and would appreciate the input.
