S&G: Safety lines aka perimeter lines

Hope everyone enjoyed Christmas day. My living room is strewn with ripped up wrapping paper
BUT MY QUESTION IS: Do most folks run the lines around the entire kayak or leave them off in the area of the coaming?
I have been looking at commercial and "home built" boats there does not seem to be a uniform pattern to put it mildly.
Safety is a major concern, but it seems the coaming would be as easy or easier to hang onto given it's larger profile.
Thoughts??
