I put 'em from one pointy end to the other ... but not in the cockpit area.
Don't assume deck lines are just for you ... other people you're paddling with can take a swim every now and then too ... nice for 'em to have something to hang on to as you or whomever works out the next steps. A nice extra touch is to add some large wooden beads to the lines to hold 'em off the deck ... which makes 'em easier to grab.
