I wonder about that. My only experience of paddling and sailing with an outrigger was using a 7 ft long ama. Paddling was hard work and sailing was slow until I heeled the canoe to bring the ama out of the water when things got much quieter and much faster. Problem seemed to be the hull speed of the ama limited to boat to about 3 kn which is easy to achieve paddling and very slow sailing, above that the wave drag - and noise - increased rapidly. I believe a paddling ama should either be the skimming type or really long and skinny to minimise wave drag; any intermediate type is going to need a sophisticated hull shape. If I did it again I would use 2 small amas mounted high so they stayed out of the water until needed . . .
