. . . If you want sharp bends, using straight grained, quarter sawn woods which bend well naturally, like ash, white oak, walnut and northern white cedar will give the highest success . . .
- I have a quantity of "withies" (not sure of spelling) that I was given, and I was told they're something to do with basket making. They're 1 x 1/16" and incredibly flexible. If I ever have to make laminates around seriously small radii that's what I'll try. The grain is the straightest and most uniform I've ever seen; I wonder what wood it is - looks like ash - also if it has had any kind of treatment.
I did a boat with laminated ribs once, 3 lams of 3/16" pine on a 6.5" radius. With a quick water dip followed by 1/2 hour rest it made the bend easily although probably kiln-dried. Virtually zero springback, I got very close dimensional control, less than 0.1" variation over 20 ribs. WRC wouldn't come close even in 1/8" thickness soaked overnight. I suspect different woods respond differently to kiln heat. BTW I used Titebond III for laminating as it tolerates moisture.
