One key advantage to steaming for bending wood is that it creates consistent heat that doesn't get high enough to permanently set the lignin. Other method like heat guns, hot pipes and such do work, but it's harder to maintain consistency with them and overheating the stock is much more likely.

Another important point is to use a form whenever possible in order to produce consistent bends. I see mentions above of using a backstrap, but you can't do that without using an inner form, too. Especially if you're laminating, the bends need to be consistent, otherwise you can end up with gaps and glue pockets in the laminate.
