Everyone jumping in is probably doing the same thing I am doing, stoking the stove trying to keep warm, bored, and happy to respond. You might do the cost comparison of 1x6 or 8 compared to 1x12, wider is often a premium price. Shorter lengths and a scarf are fine, might want to scarf similar colored strips or radically different colors, depending on the look. I scarf the thickness, move my miterbox as far past 45 degrees as it goes, put the strip on edge, against the fence and let it rip. Glued and glassed, it's strong. Enjoy the project.
