I do that on my canoe breast-hooks, mixing grain and species for visual effect in a part where slight dimensional changes will not lead to stress. However I've always understood that slash cut or flat grain wood is less stable than quarter sawn or edge grain. I suppose it's OK if the wood is really well dried and sealed. Isn't it likely to lead to problems with the glass separating?
