Thanks very much to all three of you. That is very useful information. I didn`t mention that it is a fibreglass canoe

In that case I agree with John, the canoe doesn't need the strength of deep gunnels, if it's like the fiberglass canoe I had the gunnel is mostly to stiffen the sheer from side-to-side, and maybe stop the fiberglass fraying :)
