Hello and welcome.
You should have no issues having built period furniture. You are likely no stranger to joinery and handwork. The way to do the design you want is to outline the design with your first strips, using a block plane to taper the strips to fit, then fill in using the plane to taper each strip to fit. You can lay the strip in place, mark the taper with a pencil, and use the plane to taper to the mark. Once you get started you will be amazed at how easy this is to do.
