If a kayak constructed with PVA glue is used for most of the day (8 to 10 hrs) in the hot Florida sun would any adverse conditions arise? For a number of years I have been paddling my Night Heron (constructed with PVA) in Florida and some times the deck gets too hot to touch and wondered if lifting myself out would put excess weight on the deck etc. Nick R.
Has your kayak fallen apart yet? If it hasn't, I think you have good evidence that it will be fine.
I do believe that hot sun will soften the PVA glue. This should not be a problem if the glue lines are thin and tight. I.e. if there is not much room for the glue to move it will not move even if the glue becomes soft.
If you get wood really hot, it will soften and become more flexible. If you get epoxy hot, it will be soften and become more flexible. a little bit of soft PVA glue added to the mix doesn't seem to cause problems. I'm not sure why not, but as long as you do most of your paddling in the water, where it is never going to get super hot, you should be fine. The worst place for your kayak is probably on the roof of the car in a parking lot.
