wanted to ask if anybody had any thoughts on outfitting the night heron with a skeg and, if so, any thoughts on the approach (build, buy a skeg kit etc and any vendor recommendations). also interested in recommendations/ideas about placement (how far from the stern and other placement best practices). i note that the petrel, for example, places its skeg off center to avoid sand/debris.
my initial inclination is to do it as i have retro-fitted boats with skegs after they were completed....and the order of difficulty increases significantly once you are working on a closed hull.
i am not overly reliant on skegs.....but i do several long passages every season (20 to 30 mile daily budget for a week at a time) and while i rarely used the skeg, it was really helpful when the wind/sea wasn't working with the boat.
no significant experience with the night heron design other than fitting kind of activity....would appreciate anybody's thoughts who has experience with the hull.,
thanks
Howard
