True enough for race boats, but he's not hardly talking about race boats. And yes I'm not fond of rudder boats, though I do own one. Rudders always seem to jam when you need them most, not great for safety.

I can paddle a skeg boat with a jammed skeg, darned hard to paddle a rudder boat with one of them jammed. Still better to learn to paddle without either, then if conditions get bad and your skeg/rudder won't work you can safely get home.
