Outside of the obvious loss of strength, all you need is one tiny pin hole of water infiltration into that seam and you develop a dark water stain in the wood. And... without major surgery, you can't get rid of the moisture.
Don't even think about no seam taping. Use strips of your regular cloth and you gain almost nothing in weight and enormous strength and water protection.
