Personally, I would glue with epoxy.
Rot starts from edge grain.
When you drill thru to peg you go thru edged grain in both pieces.

I just took apart the first SOF I ever built. Everyone said you could make a good boat for almost nothing with cheap materials.
Well everywhere I left edge grain not well sealed it was starting to rot within 2 years.

Your choice, how long do you want to use the boat?
