I didn't get mucus chop time this weekend after all, managed to get the new gunwale scarp he'd and glued up. I shouldn't have been so scared of scarphs, and will likely buy much cheaper material with this new skill. My scarphs were done at 9:1' and will be located towards the center of the boat, where there is hardly any bend, so I am confident it will hold. I made up my own method, and actually ended up using a #5. I started the bevel off by planing cross grain, then once had a bit of a bevel established, I switched to planing with the grain. Using this large of a plane, I was able to register the front of the plane on the bevel, set the blade right at where I wanted the bevel to begin, and slice away, of course this only worked because cedar is so soft, but it was a quick and easy way to get perfectly level scarphs with minimal effort/hardship.
