I had great instruction on stripping, but none on ripping. Wish I'd read up on this site first. I had a lot of strip variability and some burns due to handling large boards. I've wasted a lot of wood! The strain of handling the long and wide boards I was able to get was tiring and I was glad to not have had any blade contact.
There are a lot of cutesy quotes on the value of experience, but the one I like best is "no doctor is really good until he has killed one or two people."
I only killed a few strips of cedar.
