Is it safe to plane strips as thin as 3/16"? It seems to me there would be a danger of a strip splitting along runout grain and being fired out of the planer. I once experienced this when using a table router for the same thing. On subsequent inspection the bit turned out to be a bit dull, nonetheless these days I pefer to plane the plank edge before each strip is ripped and put the sawn edges of the strips on the outside of the hull for easy sanding later.
