Not sure what you meant by "dead spots". You might have just missed a spot or two- is that what you meant?

I have one boat where I used Matt varnish on the hull. One thing I learned that you have to mix the matt varnish very thoroughly scraping down to the bottom of the can. They make the varnish matt by adding wax which settles in the can. You have to get that up and thoroughly mixed.

Personally I have learned I would rather have a drip or two than some dry spots where the varnish was applied too dry.
I puddle in on an area a few ft square and then do a thorough cross hatch with the brush so I don't miss a spot and then a light tipping off going the direction of the boat.
