Thank you for the suggestions. I think this is one of those issues where the cure is worse than the symptom...
Carefuller sanded down to the wood and eliminated any of the weave that was showing. Brushed on some epoxy and .... much darker than the surrounding area. I'll lay on some glass and coats of epoxy and move on. Luckily the coaming lip may just hide most of it.
Should have left it alone. There's a small area at the front of the coaming that I'm just going to ignore or just call a "design feature".
